Self Employment
or the last great adventure!
Are you self employed or looking at it as an option.
Well if you are already self employed what I write in the following lines will come as no surprise to you, and if you have never been, then here is a little precursor.
It all started
with my immigrant Grand father who started working in America as a youth working in the Mills in New England
He made sandwiches from food he could get from butchers and bakeries and sold them to workers for lunch and drove workers to Boston from Andover along with his pregnant wife in their auto before their jobs started
He also became a junk man, and a property owner while doing anything for a buck including demolition work.
When his wife died during her fifth pregnancy, he managed to raise 4 boys through the depression, working and discovering his talent for real estate. He amassed a small quantity of buildings by renovations single and multi family homes often acquired from tax leans.
At one time he bid to demolish an old school and he and his four sons hand dismantled it and hauled it across town and rebuilt it as a 4 family apartment house back when most homes had rooms to let and an apartment was a city thing.
My Brother still owns this house today
My grand father was the first Millionaire we had ever known who earned his money, as the saying goes, "The old fashioned way!"
The world never cut him any slack
and he grew strong from it
When he was 84 and living alone an intruder attempted to mug him in his own home
Need less to say the intruder, nearly 1/2 my grandfathers age was found crying in the street when the Police arrive, as he got the licking he deserved. Never under estimate and Old man in his home
I guess the intruder failed to realize at 84
and still working, that some people never outgrow the lessons of their youth
or the fire!
Self employed and self reliant to the end
His independence was his strength
Business is like that
My Dad went to Korea
as a wireman and CID
He came home a bit banged up as the truck he was in got shelled
and he bounced out and the next truck ran over him. Ouch.
He married Mom and they raised four children throughout the 50's and 60's
He started as a western Electric employee but soon found the games between four walls dissatisfying and hired himself out to Bill Bells Electric Motor Repair Shop.
Like father like son, he too bought a house that had tenants in it. The one his brothers and Father had built from the old school.
When I was born there they needed more room so he bought a huge 4 family up the street, where he still lives and we did as children.
In those days he became an independent self employed Electrician.
Bought an old Fuel truck and delivered oil, opened a Motor repair shop from the knowledge gained earlier
and has been self reliant ever since living off his many apartment incomes.
Multiple income streams!
Remember that one
We learned how to roof, paint, tile, plumb, cement, plaster you name it, from dad and his many projects.
When Moms Dad was no longer interested in his first car, a 1926 Model T, he had Dad take it to the Dump.
Otherwise known as our garage!!!
The day they delivered it we were little children, the day we repaired it and made it run again we were teens, and the day it dies will be never as it sits at home with Dad tinkering on it still.
Funny thing as they delivered it to the garage in the back of a 1939 International dump truck, and dumped it out in front of the garage.
Some how it still survives as testament to a well engineered albeit simple design
The Model T and dad are synonymous
Strong design, dependable, takes a licking and keeps on ticking
and no matter what stays on track
Business is like that
I could add any member of our family as most every male in our family, for three generations has been self employed
But what I would like to do now is focus on you.
What has always interested me in being self employed, is the ability to set your own goals, plan your own destiny and proudly stand for what you yourself believe in.
It is very satisfying.
Are you that type of person or are you looking for that type of reward?
Because business is exhilarating and has many ups and downs but all of them are tangibly
and wonderful at revealing your inner strengths.
You must have a little dare in you, a little courage, a little faith.
You must want to be something, something you want to be known for
You must establish a path
and make it as wide as you dare
The satisfaction of self reliance and independent strength is a thrill and a skill!
Well, I too have a few irons in the fire so to speak, I am a carpenter by trade
I have a few rental units
I plow snow in the winter
I market nutritional products and I share my marketing skills and Knowledge through consultation where I help others to the grand well of self employment and self fulfillment
I do a lot of volunteer work in various groups and live a rather independent life style
You should take the plunge
experience the thrill and motivated success of self reliance through independent marketing
It sure beats moving buildings
junking old iron
and getting all worn out physically in labor intensive jobs
If you want Self employment as your ride, your gift your dream
then you must take action
Action
Business is like that!
